Eastern Carolina Barbecue Sauce


  • 1 gallon vinegar
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 2 tbs cayenne pepper
  • 3 tbs dried red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup molasses or 1 cup brown sugar
Eastern Carolina barbecue sauce does not use tomatoes and is very tart and tangy.
  • Combine all ingredients.
  • Allow to stand for several hours.
  • Serve as a table or basting sauce.
  • Recipe may be halved.
