Spicy Indian Koftas


  • 1 lb of ground lamb
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbs fresh mint, chopped
  • 1 tbs fresh cilantro, chopped
  • oil for frying
  • kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper
  • 1 small tomato, peeled, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbs fresh mint, chopped
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
Koftas are spicy lamb meat balls that are served as an appetizer along with a yogurt dipping sauce.
  • Mix all ingredients for the yogurt dip and allow flavors to marry for about 1 hour.
  • Combine the ground lamb, onion, garlic, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, tomato paste, mint, salt, pepper and cilantro in a large bowl and combine well.
  • Roll into small balls about half the size of a golf ball.
  • Add about 1/2 inch of oil in a saute pan and  using medium heat saute the koftas in batches until browned all over and cooked through.Drain on paper towels.
  • Skewer each kofta with a tooth pic place the yogurt dipping sauce in the middle of a platter and place the koftas artfully around the dip.
